Big News for this year’s BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia

Today starts a 3-day countdown to one of the most important Film Festivals in the southeast region, The BronzeLens Film Festival of Atlanta, Georgia. This four-day event includes panel discussions, Master classes, a networking lounge and an estimated 50+ screenings of feature film, short film, student film, documentary, international film and webisode presentations.

The festival’s Executive Producer, Kathleen Bertrand and Artistic Director, Deidra McDonald hosted a VIP Opening Reception on Tuesday, August 9th at Davidoff of Geneva; the luxury cigar shop nestled within The Shops Buckhead Atlanta.  It was an exquisite affair with complimentary servings of fine wine, assorted hors d’oeuvres and of course a grand collection of Davidoff cigars. Attendees dressed in cocktail attire and listened in awe of what’s to come at this year’s 7th annual BronzeLens Film Festival.

With the theme Roar, Hear My Voice! BronzeLens is once again, presenting great opportunities for participants to learn from some of the top filmmakers in the industry with panelist like Roger Bobb (CEO of BobbCat Films), Julie Dash (The Rosa Parks Story, Daughters of the Dust), Dawn Gilliam (Boyz in the Hood, Star Wars) and Matthew Cherry (9 Rides, The Last Fall).

One of the festival’s annual highlights is the BronzeLens Women Superstars Luncheon where this year’s honorees will include “Behind the Lens Superstar” Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka the Oscars!); “Legendary Superstar” Margaret Avery whom you may know as Shug Avery from The Color Purple (or Mary Jane’s mother in Being Mary Jane); and “Vanguard Superstar” Nina Yang Bongiovi (producer of Dope and Fruitvale Station) to name a few.

A previous honoree, “Visionary Superstar” (2015) Terri J. Vaughn (Greenleaf, Girlfriends Getaway), was in attendance at the reception with a first-look trailer of her directorial debut, #DigitalLivesMatter. The film will screen at Atlantic Station’s Regal Cinema on Wednesday, August 24th.

Kathleen Bertrand (Executive Producer, BronzeLens) made a very special announcement that BronzeLens 2013 “Emerging Star”, Issa Rae is set to bring her new TV show, Insecure (HBO) for viewing on Friday night! As if that news wasn’t big enough, Bertrand went on to share that BronzeLens will also have the first glance of Queen Sugar, the new OWN Network series by Ava Duvernay (Selma), another BronzeLens breakout star. Duvernay brought her very first feature film I Will Follow to the first festival back in 2010 and was awarded the very first “Emerging Superstar” Award.

Another highly anticipated event is the screening of Deborah Riley Draper’s Olympic Pride, American Prejudice. The documentary (produced with Blair Underwood) explores the repressed history of the 17 other African-American athletes who competed beside Jesse Owens in the Berlin Olympic Games. (Yes, there were more, stay woke.) BronzeLens has partnered with long-time sponsor, National Center for Civil and Human Rights and will hold the special presentation at the center on Sunday, August 28th at 2pm.

Olympic Pride, American Prejudice Synopsis:In 1936, when 18 African-American athletes dubbed the “black auxiliary” by Hitler participated in the Berlin Olympic Games, defying Nazi Aryan Supremacy and Jim Crow Racism, history forgot all except one, Jesse Owens. This is the story of the other 17.   Their heroic collective action created a seminal moment in Civil Rights.  The film follows the athletes from the attempted boycott of the 1936 Olympics to the Trials to the Games and then to the unceremonious return to America.

Yes, the 7th annual BronzeLens Film Festival is bringing a lot of Black Girl Magic and female empowerment, however, there is something special for the men as well. Brunch with the Brothers will take place on Sunday with Rushion McDonald (Neighborhood Awards), Tobias Truvillion (Empire) and Lamman Rucker (Greenleaf).
