Over the weekend, Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) along with TV One presented the 2016 Triumph Awards at Tabernacle Concert Hall located in the heart of Atlanta.
The Triumph Awards recognizes distinguished individuals and corporations in the arts, civil rights, sports, business, education and entertainment. Well-known actress and philanthropist, Tichina Arnold hosted this year’s show making it her second time in a row.
Taped in front of a live audience, the show will air Sunday, October 2 at 7PM and 9PM ET on TV One.
Our Atlanta Correspondent MiAsia Symone was able to catch up with the stars and share some wonderful moments as they graced the red carpet.
The awards presented are as follows:
Attorney Benjamin Crump – “Chairman’s Award for Historic and Transformative
Jermaine Dupri – “Triumphant Man of the Year”
Gina Adams (FedEx Exec.) – “Triumphant Woman of the Year”
Sean “Diddy” Combs – “President’s Award for Service and Humanitarian Efforts”
Tim Murphy of MasterCard – “Corporate Partner of the Year Award”
Spike Lee – “Activism in the Arts Award”
There were many great performances by gospel artist Jekalyn Carr, V. Bozeman, Nick Cannon, BJ the Chicago Kid, the James Brown Academy of Music Pupils, Joe, Eric Benet, Juan and Deborah Joy Winans, and Fantasia.
Tichina Arnold, JB Smoove, Carl Payne, Erica Ash and Teyonah Parris also united and performed a funny musical tribute “Spike Lee Joint Medley.”
Additional special appearances included Marc Lamont Hill, Dondre Whitfield, Kandi Burruss, Terri J. Vaughn, Pooch Hall, Denise Boutte, Ebony Steele, Angel McCoughtry, the “Mothers of the Movement,” Gwen Carr (mother of Eric Garner), Lesley McSpadden (mother of Mike Brown), Sybrina Fulton (mother of Trayvon Martin), and Georgia State House Representative Erica Thomas.
